What is homeschooling?
Education at home begins in infancy. Parents start the process by reading books aloud, playing with their child with shape sorters, and engaging in many other simple learning activities. Through the early years, most parents have confidence in teaching their children.
As the children begin their formal education, parents can continue the same course of learning for the child. They control such education through organizing subjects, determining content, teaching lessons, finding resources, and evaluating progress. Such direction by parents parallels the activities in the early years, they just become more involved.
Individualized education with one-on-one attention offers a child a superior education, closer relationships among the family, and the opportunity to excel in their interests. Although laws differ, home educating your child is legal in all fifty states. Many states require home schooled children to participate in standardized testing. How do such children measure in comparison to their public schooled counterparts? They consistently score very highly among such peers, usually in the 90th percentile and maintain higher college graduation rates.
Home schooling, historically, has been a movement with a connected negative stigma. Yet, homeschooling has exploded in recent years and has become mainstream. Although many who educate their children have one stay-at-home parent, other families arrange such education despite other circumstances. Such education occurs with scheduling and planning revolving around home schooling.
